Mentor Q & A

In lieu of declawing my kitten, what is your opinion of artificial smooth nails glued over the kitty's?
With all the dry cool weather in my area, a pad on my cat’s paw has cracked open. What can I do for the area?
My cat seems to have an obsession with biting and pulling her back nails and has made them very red. They are starting to curve upward. Why does she do that?
How can I get all of my cats to scratch on the post rather than on the furniture, drapes, door frames, etc.?
My three year old ginger tabby is developing dryness and cracking on the paws. Is there a lotion I can rub on them to keep the pads in better shape?
My 1 year old male cat ‘sheds’ the outer layer of his back claws (he's declawed up front). My 2-year-old female cat does not - at least not that I've noticed. Is that normal?
I have chosen not to declaw my cat and regularly clip his nails. It seems as if his nails start splitting a week or so later when they start growing back. He doesn't seem to be in pain, but he will often chew on his nails as if he is trying to rip off the split part. He also gets dirt (possibly feces) and fuzz from his blanket stuck in his nails. Is there anyway to prevent his nails from splitting like that? I'm afraid this could cause his nails to get infected.
What is the name and function of the 'toe' on a cat's forearm, above the back of the paw?
