Mentor Q & A

We adopted a cat who was left by the previous owners of our new home. She was outdoors and not fed for two weeks. She is skinny but otherwise appears healthy. How do we help her gain her weight back safely?
Does obesity cause health problems in older cats?
My two kittens are already around their full-grown size at 9 months and I am afraid they are already getting a little pudgy for their size. They are strictly indoor cats in my apartment. When would it be okay to start them on food that helps them with their weight?
My cat is 3 years old and weighs 20 pounds. Why does he weigh so much more than other cats?
Leo is a 10-/2 year old male cat. He was an outdoor cat but 2-1/2 years ago we moved to a place where cats are not allowed to roam, so we have had to keep him inside. He has been fed Purina Special Care brand Cat Food all his life. We feed him about 5 oz. of Special Care mixed with a 1/4 can of "wet" food each evening. "Dry" Special Care is available in his bowl during the day, although he does not eat much of it. He has always been a large cat, but now he is getting fat. He currently weighs 16 lbs. He is healthy, and has been under the preventative care of a veterinarian all his life. Perusing Purina's excellent web site makes us think we should have changed his food to Purina Senior Cat Chow brand long ago. Do you recommend now doing this? What feeding regimen would you suggest? Do you have any additional advice?
My elderly (14 years) Siamese is frisky enough, but instead of being overweight, I worry about him being underweight. Is there anything I can add to his feed to put a few more pounds on him? He has dry food available at all times, along with clean water, and gets a small can of cat food once daily for the oils therein. Can you suggest anything else?
My 3 cats share their food. I use Purina Cat Chow (for all ages) but they seem to be gaining weight and I would like to start a diet for all of them. Can you recommend a Purina product? Two of the cats are between 1and 5 years old, and one is about 6.
How do you tell if your cat is overweight or not?
