 The Importance of Water

Mentor Q & A

I know that water is important for cats, but my 6 month old kitten refuses to drink it. What should I do?
My 3 1/2 year old cat is ravenous for water. He has access to it all day, but I find him drinking from glasses and sinks. Should I be concerned that he has a urinary tract infection or do you think he just likes water?
My cat doesn't drink water. What should I do?
My one-year-old cat has recently developed the habit of drinking water just with his paw (he'll soak his paw in his water dish, then pull it out and lick the water off). Is he getting enough water this way? Is there something I can do to encourage "normal" drinking (or do I even need to)?
Are certain kinds of water dishes better than others? Is round better than square? I have a square dish and they seem to splash more water on the floor than they drink.
How long can a cat go without food and water? I have a cat that ran away on Saturday (around noon) and today is Thursday (almost midnight) and I was wondering if he was somewhere that he could not get to food or water, how long are cats able to go without?
What is considered a typical amount of water intake in an adult cat? My kitten, Shadow, is about 6 months old now, and from the day we brought him home, he drinks a lot of water. I know this is good, and the Vet said nothing to worry about, but what is the average a kitten drinks? He also drinks from the glass that my husband has at night, which is cute. I fill that up every night for him also.
How can I tell if my 6-month-old kitten is getting enough water in her diet?
I have been giving my 1-year-old female cat distilled water for over 6 months. Should I continue?
