Mentor Q & A

How old should the kittens be when they stop nursing and begin eating solid food?
I always see kittens drinking milk, but my sister told me that milk is bad for kittens. Is this true?
What can I do about kitten gas?
My 4-month-old kitten will not eat Kitten Chow. He will eat Cat Chow. Is this going to hurt him?
Right after my 4-5 month old kitten eats, he whines like he wants more food when we go into the kitchen. He had roundworms and was treated for it, and we are giving him drops every two weeks. I don’t understand why he whines so much.
My 11-month-old puppy and 11-week-old kitten eat each other’s food (Purina Puppy Chow and Kitten Chow). Do I need to make sure they are eating the right one and how do I go about that?
Is tuna fish okay for kittens? If so, is it better in spring water or oil?
We just found a kitten that is about 3 weeks old. What should we feed him?
 Do kittens need a diet?
My kitten is 8 weeks old and was the runt of the litter. She looks very fragile compared to her brother (which I adopted also). She eats and drinks a lot (Purina Kitten Chow). The vet says she isn’t sick. What should I do?
Should you give a kitten milk or just water?
My kitten will not eat any type of cat food – only what I am eating. What can I do to get her to eat kitten food?
Since I have a busy schedule, I have started my kitten on the “grazing” system of feeding. I don't feed her certain amounts at scheduled times, I merely make sure there is always food in her bowl. She eats when she wants to. I figure, she knows better than anybody when or how much she needs to eat. I have noticed that she eats regularly and never gorges or starves herself. Therefore, is it OK if I continue to do this?
Our cat is just now one year old and has eaten Kitten Chow. We had a cat that developed urinary tract problems at about age 7. Should we start the new kitten on foods designed to protect against that now, or wait a few years? Are Purina products just as good as what the vet prescribed for our other cat?
I have a 7-month-old kitty and my dad (who never listens to what I say) keeps on feeding him canned tuna fish! And not just as an occasional treat either. He tends to leave the cans on the floor. I know this is not too good for him, but I want to know if he can get really sick if this goes on.
Why can’t I leave food out for my kitten at all times to eat whenever it wants?
How many times a day should I feed my kitten? I am now feeding him about three cans a day.
Is it safe to feed a kitten (8 months old) raw chicken or beef?
Gas is the subject, and I already read the other answers. My Siamese kitten (now 7 mos.) has gas only when he is "stressed." And, it's enough to drive everybody out of the house! Any suggestions? He only eats Purina Deli-Cat - he won't eat anything else! Canned food is no good, all he does is suck off the gravy and spit the other stuff back in his dish.
Our 8 month old male seems to be overweight. Could this be because there is too much protein in his food?
I feed my three 9 month old kittens dry food only. Is it better to feed two meals per day or just to let them "graze" by using an automatic feeder? I have been using the grazing method for a couple of months and have noticed they seem to be eating less (and not gorging). Is this because they are older, or because they know food is always available, or perhaps a combination? When I fed two meals, I admit I wasn't always consistent with the timing. I am concerned about my kittens becoming overweight.
How long should I feed my 1-year-old cat kitten food?
I gave our two kittens (6 and 7 months) a bit of olive; green, stuffed. I didn't think they would even eat the small pieces given to them but to my surprise, not only did they eat them they begged for more. They each had less than one half of an olive each, but they acted as if they were on catnip. Is this OK to give them once in awhile, they so very seemed to enjoy the olives?
What will happen if my kitten doesn't eat his food?
I have a 7 month old kitten -- should I begin to think about weaning him to Cat Chow rather than Kitten Chow?
Purina One Kitten Formula & Kitten Chow seem to have different formulas. Why? And which is best? Please I do want to feed the best available.
At how many weeks/months/years should a cat start eating canned food?
We just got an 8-week old kitten and love it so very much! I was wondering if we can give a kitten that young cat treats? If so, which do you recommend?
How many meals a day should I feed my kitten?
I just recently discovered that my nine-month-old kitten loves mayo. He will lick it off the spoon and look for more. Is it okay for him?
Is it OK to mix dry food brands in my two kittens' food bowl?
