Mentor Q & A

I adopted a loving, friendly, stray cat about a year ago. I am having trouble with his eating. He is on a canned food diet only because of problems with kidney stones. That switch was hard for him because he loved his dry food. He only eats if I stand there and pat him. I am trying to break him of that by putting him in his room with his food, tell him to eat and close the door. When I come back later, if he has not eaten, I take the food back up. I am hoping he will get hungry enough to eat without being petted. He is not eating like he should and instead he is taking out his anger on our other cat when he gets out of his room. He loves his room and is locked in there during the day while we're at work because he intimidates our other kitty that was there first. He gets lots of love and attention but petting him so eats all the time does not work especially when I'm out of town and we have a kitty sitter. How can I get him to eat by himself?
My cat, Andrew, always tries to eat my other cat's food; he doesn't eat his own, but walks off and leaves it. It's a way of intimidating her, I think. Haley is very sweet and always demurs to him. (By the way, I feed them separately.) Any suggestions about changing this behavior?
