Mentor Q & A

I'm thinking of acquiring a kitten but I'm not sure what breed I want. What are the most popular breeds of cats?
We are getting a new kitten but already have a dog. Will they get along?
I’m thinking of getting a kitten, but I have a cat that is 5 years old. What should I do to make it easy on the cat?
I am going to obtain a Shar-Pei puppy and I would like to know what breed of kitten I should obtain for harmony?
My 9-month-old kitten was so close and loving before I got the new kitten. She never comes near me now. She just wants to be with the 5-month-old kitten. I got my original cat for company and now I have no company. The second kitten was feral and is still scared of me. She won't let me pet her except when I am feeding her. I hate to admit this but I wish I hadn't gotten the 2nd kitten. But they do keep each other company during the day when I work. Is there any way I can get them to be closer with me. My older kitten was so close to me before I brought in a kitten that was born in my backyard.
I just adopted a cat from a shelter that was abused by his former owner. He is 5 to 6 years old. My problem is that he has a very bad temper. Often he goes from high moods to low mean moods. I never know what to expect. Is there something that I can do to help him adjust?
I've just recently lost my cat. I am thinking of adopting another, but am feeling guilty about considering it. How soon is too soon to adopt a cat after the loss of one? I should also tell you that I still have one cat, although they weren't very close, they did play together often and had lived together for 4 years.
My parents just moved out into the country and the past couple of days when I have gone out to visit them, a cat has been sitting on their front step. When I go over to it, it loves to be petted and is craving attention. I have never owned a cat and I don't know anything about taking care of them. I'm not sure if it's abandoned or if I should take it in. I'm seriously considering bringing it home, but I don't know if it has fleas or any other types of disease. I have 3 pet rabbits also and I don't want the cat to give them anything.
My daughter has asked for a kitten for Christmas. We have two cats and a four-month-old puppy already. Do you think this is wise?
I recently adopted an intact male cat (soon to be neutered); I have a smaller neutered male who is understandably upset. I am introducing them gradually. I have noticed that the new, larger cat rolls onto his back and curls his paws inward (as if he's knitting); is this a sign of submission?
I adopted 11-year-old Sugar three months ago. She spends most of her time hiding in a closet. When she does venture out, our one-year-old, Trouble, chases her and harasses her back in. Is there something I can do about that? Or should I continue to let the two cats handle it. They verbally abuse each other at every meeting.
My husband will be bringing home the cat that we are adopting at 2 a.m. Is it safe to leave the cat alone to explore while my family sleeps or should we pick the cat up during the day? We know nothing of the animal as my husband is getting it from a friend at work.
