They're all grown up—it's time to start treating, and feeding, them that way. Just because they're older, however, doesn't mean they're completely self-sufficient. Adult cats have nutritional needs particular to their life stage just as kittens and senior cats do, and they need your help to meet them. The CatChow.com Adult Care Center will clue you in on what you need to know.

Is Your Cat Safe From Heartworm?

Mentor Q & A

How can I control fleas for my 6-year-old male cat?
How can you tell if your cat has a tapeworm or other types of worms if you use scooping type litter?
My cat has been ill with ringworm, and the oral and topical medications are not helping him. Do you have any ideas what could be wrong, as I am running out of money and ideas?
My cat seems to have some type of worm. Occasionally we will notice small “rice-like” parasites on her backside. Sometimes they appear to move and other times not. We have tried to deworm her with roundworm medication and this has not worked. Her appetite and demeanor seem normal. What could this be, and is it contagious to humans?
 Are ringworms black and small?
How do you get rid of ringworms?
My cats are indoor cats, but we just moved to an area where it is safe to let them outside; however, I only let them outside in the front yard for about ten minutes or so and while I stand and watch them. My question is when is flea season? Right now it is winter, can they still get fleas? I want to know when I should not let them outside any longer so that they don't get fleas.
Are so-called "Sonic" devices for removing rodent pests from your home really safe for a household with cats?
I think that my cat may have worms. I want to know if my family can contract worms from contact with him. He sleeps on our beds and cuddles with us on the couches.
Sulphur taken in small amounts is used as a holistic remedy by humans to repel ticks. Would minute/trace amounts of sulphur have the same effect on mature cats?
I am curious if there are any good reasons not to use cat stools in compost. I know I could add horse and cow manure to the compost. What are the issues for cat manure? Is it so different? I am thinking of house cats.
I am curious if there are any good reasons not to use cat stools in compost. I know I could add horse and cow manure to the compost, let the compost mature for a year, and turn into the soil for a vegetable garden. What are the issues for cat manure? Is it so different? I am thinking of house cats.
Is it healthy or ok to let my cat lick my face near my mouth awhile after he has killed a mouse? He is very affectionate and I feel bad turning him away. I don't want to get any mouse disease.
I need to know if I can treat my cat for mites with out the care of a veterinarian.
What is the safest product to remove ants around Misty Cat's food & water dishes? Baking soda?
Do indoor cats need rabies shots?
Do flea collars actually work even if your kitten walks around outside sometimes?
My cat eats her regular diet, but every summer she also eats lizards and becomes skinny, she is healthy otherwise. Are the lizards causing this?
 Why do animals get tapeworms?
My cat is an outdoor cat during the day. I use Advantage on her monthly and comb and brush her daily but she still appears to have fleas. Any other suggestions?
Are there natural products to control fleas on my kittens so that a pesticide does not have to be used?
Can rabies be spread by a cat licking a person? If so, what are human symptoms?
Where do kittens/cats catch fleas from and why do they catch them? Also how would I avoid fleas from catching on the kitten/cat?
How old should a kitten be before he/she is wormed?
Someone told me that cats can get and spread scabies. I have 2 housecats and am wondering is this true, and if so, how would you treat it?
I found a tiny stray kitten in the country that had been dumped. His head was broken out in oozing sores and I assumed he had been attacked by a dog. It turns out maggots were living in these wounds that the vet had to remove. I believe these are botfly larva. I've never seen this kind of infection before. Is it common? Do flies attack outdoor animals or infect already open wounds? I'm ready to lock up all my animals indoors!
My 6-month-old male kitten has never shown signs of fleas or ticks. Do I need to treat him with some sort of flea and tick prevention anyway? Or is it ok not to unless I see signs of fleas? He is strictly an indoor cat.
How do you get rid of fleas off my cat?
My four year old indoor cat has recently had what I would call a severe reaction to a flea drop treatment from Hartz. Within half an hour of the treatment, she was panting heavily, and growling. Realizing it must have been the flea drop, we bathed her with cool water and after a few minutes, she began purring. Is this a common occurrence with the newer flea treatments that are available from pet stores? She's used Advantage before, and never had this reaction. Is there a significant difference in the composition of the Hartz product vs. Advantage, or could this have been a bad "batch"?
I have heard about a couple of fatal cases w/ cats and over the counter monthly flea treatments. Can this really happen with an OTC flea treatment and why?
Is there a home remedy for treating worms?
How often do you have to worm your cat? Once a month or more?
I have never dealt with fleas. My cat is an indoor cat, can he still get fleas and if so, I will I know if he has them?
I have a 10-month-old kitten and she's in good health. Do I need to worry about her getting Heartworm or Ringworm for upcoming summer season?
If I take my cat outside with a harness or leash and under my supervision is it still possible for my cat catch any kinds of life threatening or harmful diseases or sickness or parasites?? My cat seems to really want to go outside but I'm scared.
