They're all grown up—it's time to start treating, and feeding, them that way. Just because they're older, however, doesn't mean they're completely self-sufficient. Adult cats have nutritional needs particular to their life stage just as kittens and senior cats do, and they need your help to meet them. The CatChow.com Adult Care Center will clue you in on what you need to know.

Mentor Q & A

My 21-year-old cat seems to be hitting her face after she eats causing her to keep opening up a wound on her eye. Why is she hitting her face?
My 18-year-old cat has lost quite a bit of weight over the last year (15 lbs. down to 5.5 lbs.) and eats much less. Does this mean his life is coming to an end? Is there anything I can do to prolong his life? How long do geriatric cats usually live after they have started deteriorating?
I noticed about 3 years ago that my 14-year-old cat’s pupils began to be dilated all the time and she seems now to be blind or at least sees only shadows. Is this a common thing for older cats? She still gets to her litterbox in the basement, doesn’t have accidents, and seems healthy in every way. She’s always been an indoor cat.
My 18-year-old cat was diagnosed with 'senile seizures' 3 years ago. A small dose of phenobarbital everyday seems to control them. If I have to continue the dose, how much is too much and what causes the seizures?
What age was the oldest living cat? I have a cat that is at least 19. Is my cat close?
My female domestic shorthair is now 21. She has minor kidney disease and doesn’t have the greatest teeth. Can a cat chew with its gums?
I have an 8-year-old cat who from time to time makes unfamiliar noises -- like low whizzing and crackles. He snores while sleeping. I've seen vets about it several times and they say it’s nothing to worry about -- it’s his age. They've checked his respiratory system, lungs, trachea, etc. and found nothing. Is there anything I can do for him?
I have a 13 year old cat that is losing weight but has NO signs of being sick!
I have a 15 year old male (neutered) cat. For the past week or so, his urine does not smell. Does this mean that his kidneys are not working?
I have a tabby cat that will be 15 yrs young this year. At his last checkup I was concerned that his eyes are becoming a bit cloudy and that he may have cataracts. My vet said he didn't have cataracts, just "old kitty eyes." What does this mean? His vision does not appear to be compromised in any way.
I have a 9 year old female cat that weighs about 12 lbs. I am a little concerned about the amount of her water intake. I feed her Iams "less active" dry formula. She seems to drink a great deal of water daily and urinate several times a day. Could this be a sign of diabetes? What is the normal amount of water a cat of her age should drink each day?
One of our cats (9 yrs old) was diagnosed with transient diabetes last July. He was on insulin for approximately 2 weeks and then the vet tested him & said he no longer needed it. His levels were back to normal. We were having his glucose level checked once a month and everything was normal for about 3 months and suddenly it shot up again. He showed none of the behavior changes as before but he did stop eating again. After about 1-2 month period he's now back to eating his Purina Cat Chow brand Cat Food and seems to be his old self. Does this mean that he will go through these transient periods on and off for the rest of his life?
Should a senior cat be taken to the vet more frequently to screen for disease?
I've recently had to put my cat Ingrid to sleep because of kidney failure and lymphoma. Can you tell me how to keep my next cat's kidneys healthy so it doesn't happen to them? I always made sure she had fresh water while she was alive. Maybe it was the cat water fountain I used at one time until it burned out (it had a charcoal filter)? Maybe some charcoal got in her kidneys somehow?
We have a Russian brown hair who is ten years old. She is turning grey on her roff and down her chest. Is this normal?
I have a 21-year-old cat that has gone blind in the past 48 hours. I know some cats can adjust to this. So far, she is not. Is there any way to help her adjust? How long does it take most older cats to adjust to blindness. I realize if she does not adjust I will have to put her down.
