They're all grown up—it's time to start treating, and feeding, them that way. Just because they're older, however, doesn't mean they're completely self-sufficient. Adult cats have nutritional needs particular to their life stage just as kittens and senior cats do, and they need your help to meet them. The CatChow.com Adult Care Center will clue you in on what you need to know.

Mentor Q & A

My 13 year old female cat has begun urinating and today, defecating on our bed. She first did it when we were treating her for ear-mites -- she hates the rinse and antibiotic our vet prescribed. We assume she is doing this because she is mad; do you have any suggestions?
My 14 year-old male cat has started spraying in the house. He was neutered many years ago. What can I do to stop him and what can I do to get rid of the odor? (He stops it and then starts again. I have 2 cats that stay outside that he doesn't like and he stays inside.)
I have two cats, one is 18 and the other is 15. They continuously cry and lately seem very disoriented. Can cats become senile, and if so, is there anything I can do for them?
Why has my male 16 year old Siamese cat deserted his favorite chair, and only want to sleep on another chair or on the chair to my desk?
We have a 9 year old American Shorthair, she is really affectionate at night at bedtime or whenever one of us lies down. If, however you pick her up she grumps and hisses, never tries to bite; she’s just real nasty and grumpy. She has always been this way. Any suggestions?
My cat is 16 years old and plays with certain toys, usually mice, and she makes an awful noise when she is done with the toy. It is unlike the many noises she makes. I was wondering if she was making some kind of call to signal her family to join in the kill or is it a signal that the mouse has to die now?
My 8 year old cat has suddenly started meowing loudly and carrying things around in her mouth (socks, bras, etc). She does this at all hours of the days and night. My friend suggested that she was "nesting" for me as I am 7-1/2 months pregnant. She doesn't seem to be in any pain or anything. What do you think?
During the time that the two (new kitten and older resident cat) are initially separated, how much time is necessary to spend with the kitten so that she will develop into an emotionally healthy cat? I read that it is more important to spend time with the adult cat so that she will not feel as if she is being replaced by the kitten, but I also have read that it is important to spend time with a new kitten so that they will develop into an emotionally healthy cat.
When I pick up my other cat meows, sometimes when I groom her she gets nasty. She is 14 and lies around a lot. Are any of these things bad or are they just natural from old age?
My Cat is about 10 years old and has a toy (action figure tied to a string) that she played "fetch" with for years. The last couple of years she hasn't play with the toy, but every so often I will hear her meowing a deep meow, like she is crying. When I find her, she will be dragging her toy along and when she sees me she will drop the toy and just look at me. Not really sad, just nonchalant. I will try to play with her, with the toy and she may or may not swat at it, but she doesn't really get into it or fetch. I wonder if she is having sad memories of when she used to have the energy to play????
I have a 15-year-old cat that lives in my home; however she does not allow anyone to touch or go near her. Do you have any suggestions other than tranquilizers? She is now ill with an eye infection and cystitis and is quite impossible to treat. When we go to the vets I grind up a tranquilizer in her food and it usually works. This is the only time I can hold her and I enjoy petting her and she appears to like it. She is very well adjusted to my other cats and the dog in the home. When she is cornered she hisses and scratches and bites when you catch her.
My 10-year-old cat is suddenly purring so loud that you can hear him in the next room. We are preparing to move and it has been stressful on the family. Is this his nervous reaction? The vet checked him and said he seemed fine. I am still concerned.
When training an older cat (12) are there any methods that are more or less effective than they would be for a kitten?
