They're all grown up—it's time to start treating, and feeding, them that way. Just because they're older, however, doesn't mean they're completely self-sufficient. Adult cats have nutritional needs particular to their life stage just as kittens and senior cats do, and they need your help to meet them. The CatChow.com Adult Care Center will clue you in on what you need to know.

Mentor Q & A

One of my cats constantly sheds fur. Is this symptom of a nutritional problem or is it just normal cat behavior?
I am a first-time cat owner. I have heard that cats like to eat grass. Is this true, should I let him and what type of grass should he eat? Also, what are the benefits?
What can I do for my cat’s dry skin?
Recently our cat was diagnosed with anemia (had 17% packed cell volume). What caused the anemia? The veterinarian said it could have been a parasite of the blood. What kind of nutritional care should we give him to help him recover?
Can I use cat hairball treatment for my dog, too? She has long hair and gets more hairballs than my cat.
What can I do to prevent my two adult cats from shedding so much? They shed all the time – not just seasonally.
My cat is constantly licking paper and often makes the paper curl. She mostly licks white paper, but if we are not paying attention she prefers to lick photographs and carbonless paper. Could this be a nutritional deficiency or is this behavior emotional in nature?
Is it okay for my cats to eat grass?
Is there any danger in a dog’s eating feces out of a cat’s litter box?
I am very concerned because my 1 year old cat is skinny, even though I feed her good she never gains weight. What could be the problem and what should I do?
What is a healthy way to help my older cat to gain some weight? I know calories can, but from what sort of foods?
My cat is overweight. I purchase Purina One Reduced calorie but instead of losing weight, she's gained more. What's my next step?
What can we feed a stray cat that came into our life and appears to be malnourished?
My cat has begun to eat grass when he is let outside and he usually vomits when he comes back in. Why is he doing this?
My three cats are all different ages. One is 10+, one needs specialty pH formula, and the other is a kitten. If they all receive the pH formula, it won't harm them, will it?
My cat's waste has recently begun to smell very bad. I have not changed his food or litter. Is there a certain food that would maybe neutralize his stomach and cut some of the odor?
My older cat has a very sensitive stomach. Sometimes when she eats, she ends up throwing it all up. Is there a specific food that I should be feeding her or is this a more serious problem?
