They're all grown up—it's time to start treating, and feeding, them that way. Just because they're older, however, doesn't mean they're completely self-sufficient. Adult cats have nutritional needs particular to their life stage just as kittens and senior cats do, and they need your help to meet them. The CatChow.com Adult Care Center will clue you in on what you need to know.

Mentor Q & A

I'm a new kitten owner and was wondering at what age they begin to groom themselves? My kitten is almost three months old now and still does not clean himself. Any ideas?
Should I bathe our new kitten and if so, what should I use? How often should a kitten be bathed?
Can I shampoo my kitten with human shampoo?
I am a new white persian kitten owner and I am having trouble keeping up with his runny eyes and staining. I was wondering if this is normal as I'm getting conflicting advice.
How old should a kitten be before you trim his nails?
I just adopted an 8-week old female kitten from a shelter. She doesn't seem to want to groom herself - at most she'll lick one paw for a few seconds and then quit. How can I train her to clean herself? It's particularly difficult because I have to follow her to the litter box to wipe her bottom after she uses it.
Why do cats like to wash so much and why do they purr so much?
My cat has a lot of dandruff, why?
My kitten is nine weeks old and has lived with me for a week. He's doing fine except for one gross thing...he doesn't clean himself after using the litter box. Yup, little dark disgusting clods hang on until I get a tissue and clean him up! He grooms himself well, otherwise. Is there a way I can train him to groom that area?
My youngest cat is the only one out of my 4 that really has a strong odor while he’s using the litter box why?
Our kitten (8 mos. old) cleans herself very well, except for her eyes. What is a good way to clean her eyes?
My kitten is always grooming herself. Every time I see her she is grooming. Is this normal?
