They're all grown up—it's time to start treating, and feeding, them that way. Just because they're older, however, doesn't mean they're completely self-sufficient. Adult cats have nutritional needs particular to their life stage just as kittens and senior cats do, and they need your help to meet them. The CatChow.com Adult Care Center will clue you in on what you need to know.

Mentor Q & A

My cat has a lot of white flakes around her ears and what can I do for this?
I've seen many different products for bathing cats...shampoos that require water, foams that are used without water, or just plain water. Which do you recommend?
Why is my cat losing its fur?
We have a problem with one of our cats, Seren. She is about 5 years old and has been spayed for 4 years. Over the past couple months, she has begun to smell really badly. Smelling like her feces actually. We bathed her and she smelled fine for a couple days but then went back to this stench which permeates every room that she enters. Her health appears fine. What can we do? We thought that maybe it was her pouch (from spaying) or her tail as she does not really cover up her business. It is embarrassing as hosts and we feel like awful pet owners because we do not pet her as it is impossible to breathe with her on a lap.
Two questions about hair color -- my cat is a male American short hair, and is almost 2 years old. I was wondering if it is normal for cats of this age to develop new markings? He is black and white, and has recently been getting whiter around his eyes, where he used to be totally black. Why is my cat's hair changing color? He was black and white and now his tail and underneath hair is becoming a tannish color.
Our vet gave us Advantage to apply to our cat's neck. The cat loves to sit on our lap and be petted. Is there any danger in rubbing her neck after the medication has been applied?
My cat was recently given prednisone to take every other day. I had brought him to the vet due to excessive licking of his fur to the point he looked "shaved." What does prednisone do to help this condition? I've looked it up on the Internet but it mostly shows remedy for human use. Would these apply to cats too?
My cat's fur is oily like almost all the time. Why could this be?
My kitten has Eosinophilic Plaque - what is this and how can I help her? I have been going to the vet for cortisone injections but that doesn't seem to help. They took blood work and said that everything was ok. Is there anything else that I can do for her - is this serious?
My vet has put our cat on Ovaban. I would like to know what Ovaban is and why it has changed my cat. He is a 13-year-old tabby who, before Ovaban, would not eat and had lost over half his weight in the past year. Numerous tests were done at great expense and 3 different DVMs could not find a problem. He just shunned his face at the food wet or dry and basically had to be forced to eat. Since Ovaban he eats great amounts, up to 6 times a day, with no encouragement.
I have a 7 month old male short hair and everyone remarks on his coloring. He is predominantly white but he has a phantom of the opera mask, a ringtail, and several spots. The thing is, he is white, black and brown. People keep telling me that it is rare for a male. Is this true?
What is a rodent ulcer? My cat got it on his upper right lip. Please can you help me?
My current kitty has these tufts of fur at the base of his ears that I've never seen on a domestic before. I named him after an elf (from JRR Tolkien) because of these tufts! I've only seen something similar in wildcats such as bobcats and lynx's - is it possible for domestics to mate with those two?
I have heard that if you use a fabric softener sheet on a cat it will pick up any loose hair. Is this safe?
My 11-month old kitten thinks his cat brush is a toy. He constantly tries to swipe at it or bite it. His hair is long and is starting to get tangles. Why is this and what can I do to stop it?
My two-year-old cat was out outside last night since the weather has become nice. She came home this morning with paint on her fur. How do I get this off of her?
