Can Cats Become Depressed?

I had to put one of my cats to sleep. My other cat is howling, not eating and sleeps a lot more. What can I do to help him adjust to his loss?

She is a very affectionate cat but only to me and is extremely timid around other people. I have a friend who will be coming to check on both the house and the cat when I am gone. He is one of the few people that she has allowed to pet her. Is there anything I can do for her before I go?
