They're all grown up—it's time to start treating, and feeding, them that way. Just because they're older, however, doesn't mean they're completely self-sufficient. Adult cats have nutritional needs particular to their life stage just as kittens and senior cats do, and they need your help to meet them. The CatChow.com Adult Care Center will clue you in on what you need to know.

Mentor Q & A

You indicated in one of your wonderful responses to a question, a product similar to a mousetrap, but safer, called "snappers." I have been looking for these but have been unsuccessful. I was wondering if you would happen to know of any online stores or regular pet stores that may carry them.
We have a couple of the popular decorator water fountains...one resin and one copper...in our homes, and I was wondering if it is safe for our cats to drink the water in them...they like the running water, but is it safe...i.e. paint, copper, lead? I haven't ever heard anything about the safety of these water products.
Could my cat get poisoned by a waterbug if he ate it?
Now that summer is here, my American shorthair tabby is so hot that all he does all day is lay sprawled on the floor like a statue. Is there a safe way to cool him down without shocking his system?
Can a cat get a mosquito borne disease? Are they susceptible to the West Nile virus that has been in the news? Can they get Lyme disease from ticks? How do flea treatments you put on the back of a cat work? Is the treatment absorbed into the bloodstream. If not, does it somehow cover all of the skin? Does it poison the flea or just cause the flea to avoid the cat?
Why do kittens or adults cats get behind open drawers because you never know when there and you shut the drawer on them?
Can you use rubbing alcohol on a cat?
What foods are toxic to cats? My cat is nearly 1 year old and has developed a love for most human foods...she never begs, but simply waits for me to give her a little of whatever is on offer. I have read some of the previously posted questions and know that the need of a nutritionally balanced meal...but what I really need to know is; is there any food that is toxic to cats? eg: cheese, margarine, bread, etc.
I have a 5 month old cat, and every time we go somewhere we put her in her pet taxi. Even when we go to work. So my question is how old can a cat be to leave it out in the house all the time. Because I have read that you don't leave a kitten unattended. We would like to know this, because we want to start leaving her out.
I've been thinking of growing fresh herbs in my apartment. Are there any I should avoid because they're not good for cats?
How cold is too cold for an outdoor cat?
Can kittens wear sweaters like dogs do?
I'm taking my kitten home for the holiday to my parents' house. (I live in an apartment.) I know cats have a sense of height, but I'm worried that my kitten might fall through the rails at the top of the stairs to the floor below. Should I keep him on ground floor or put a board up against the top rails, or is his sense of height good enough?
My nine month old kitten loves to jump up on the counter and watch the turntable in the microwave go round and round. Is sitting so close to the microwave harmful? What about laying on top of the TV when it is on?
My 8 month old Turkish Angora loves to be in high places. He has recently learned to climb on top of the pantry (it's about 8 feet high). He scares me to death when he jumps down from up there. He lands on his feet, but with quite a thud. Will he hurt himself doing this? How can I stop him from getting up there?
