Feeding Your Kitten

Establishing Proper Eating Habits For Your Kitten

Mentor Q&A

About 3 weeks ago I purchased a new set of bowls for my kitten's water and food and now she doesn't seem to be eating or drinking as much as she used to. What can we do to help her? I threw away the old bowls.

Why does my kitten try to "cover" his food as though he were in his litter box? Scratches at imaginary sand around his food.

How can I train my kitten to eat more slowly?

My 8 month old kitten refuses to chew her dry food - she just swallows it whole. She does not vomit it up but I'm afraid her teeth will suffer long term with her never chewing. Her littermate chews all his dry food. Is there anything I can try?

Why does my kitten insist on throwing his dry food out of the bowl? I have tried using a regular cat food dish (he threw the food into the water side) and now I'm using a soup mug (it's deeper) and he still insists on throwing the food on the floor. He eventually eats some of the food from the floor but most gets picked up and thrown away. Any ideas?

My kitten is about 3-1/2 months old. I brought her home when she was 2 months old. I have had much difficulty establishing a regular eating pattern. She eats both soft and dry food. At times she will go a day without eating and will just nibble on the food. Overall she is very active, playful and appears to be happy. Any suggestions regarding her eating and nutrition would be greatly appreciated.

My 9-month old kitten puts his toy mice in his food bowl. Why? Sometimes 2 or 3 at a time.

My kitten never liked the soft food but loves her dry food. Just recently she began putting pieces of the dry stuff in her water bowl? Any reasoning why?

Why do my eight-week-old kittens lick the dirt?

Why does my kitten, 8 weeks old, want to eat cat litter? It doesn't matter what kind. I have gone to shredded paper and he leaves it alone.

First, my male kitten will sit by his empty bowl and just looks at me, so I get him some food and water, he will look at the food and then continue to stare at me as if to say "that's it?" Then he will lie down next to the bowl and put his paws and head on the bowl and just lie there. What does this mean?

My kitten (9 months) doesn't like to eat out of her plastic food bowl. I noticed that she would use her paw or mouth to take out the food and then eat it on the floor. I clean out her bowl every morning so why would this happen and should I change her bowl to a metal one?

In the morning when we try to feed our 9-month-old kitten he at first seems very interested. He rubs against our legs as we prepare the food. But once we put it down for him he won't eat it. If we leave it down he will eventually eat (but we really can't leave it out because our older cat has a special diet and would eat the kitten food.) Why does the kitten act interested in eating when he is not and what can we do to get him on our schedule for eating?

My cat seems to have an eating problem, she likes to lick her dry food into her mouth and swallow the food without chewing. How can I fix that problem? How to train her to chew her food?
