Behavior and interaction: Leaving your kitten home alone

I have a 5 month old cat, and every time we go somewhere we put her in her pet taxi. Even when we go to work. So my question is how old can a cat be to leave it out in the house all the time. Because I have read that you don't leave a kitten unattended. We would like to know this, because we want to start leaving her out.
