Mentor Q&A

I'd like to be able to take my kitten to the park. Is it possible to train her to use a leash?

Do you know of any place that will get a kitten out of a tree?

I'm going to have a new kitten soon and I have to have it outside. Is there anyway or thing I can do to make it feel better during the winter and other seasons?

My 8-month-old cat chewed apart a dangling cat toy and ate the elastic string it was hanging on and later coughed it up in a hairball. How will I know what kind of toys to buy that are strong enough to prevent this? Shouldn't all cat toys sold be pre-tested to prevent this?

My 5-1/2 month old kitten likes to sleep in high places, like on top of cabinets, etc. Is that normal?

Can I train my 3-month-old kitten to walk on a leash? She loves to go outside, but I am not ready to make her an outside cat.

How do I keep my 6-month-old kitten from escaping outside the back door every time someone opens it? My other cat doesn't do that.

How do I stop my kittens from destroying my Christmas tree?

I have a five-month-old feral kitten that I adopted when she was four weeks old. I have attempted numerous times to acquaint her with wearing a collar but each time she becomes angry and aggressive and refuses to move except for occasional moments of sliding across the room on her neck. I plan to keep her as a strictly indoor cat but I like the idea of a collar in case she should happen to get out of the house at some point. I’ve heard of microchip implants for identification purposes, but I also know that not every shelter checks for those when a lost animal is brought in. How can I get her used to wearing a collar, or will she ever get used to it? Are there any alternatives to consider? Help!

My kitten is now 8 months old...I periodically travel for 3-7 days at a stretch. What is the longest period I should leave him alone in the house (of course with food/water/etc)? Is the house more comfortable for him than a boarding house?

My one 5-month-old kitten loves to climb up on window curtains to look outside. He also waits and howls by the garage door because he wants to go out there. I am too close to a major highway and wooded area to let either of my kittens outside. How miserable will they be in the spring and summer if they aren't let outside? Is there any substitute for "outside adventures"?

Why are kittens so curious?

I am a first-time kitten owner. My kitten is four months old. I have been reluctant to turn on my gas fireplace since I am uncertain if my pet will instinctively stay away from it or not. I am also very careful when I open the oven door. He loves to get by the registers and lie in the sun, so I know he loves the warmth. Will he instinctively know to stay away from something hot?

How do you discourage a 10-month-old cat from climbing trees? Our cat has been up 4 different trees in the last month and will stay there for several days. We've managed to get her out, but we're afraid she will get up too high. She is an inside/outside cat no possibility of keeping her inside.

I am going to get a new kitten in a few days and I was wondering what the best way is for me to make it an outdoor cat. I do have an enclosed porch for it to sleep and for a litter box for now, but I do want it to be an outdoor cat. Can you help me?

I have a male cat that is now a year old. He will not go out the door why is this and is this normal?

My boyfriend picks our kitten (about 9 months old) up by the back of the neck because "that's what their mothers do." I tell him that Brixton is too old for that now. Is he? Is doing this hurting him in any way?

Can I put my kitten in a cage?

How can I keep my cat from going outside?

Can we take our new kitten on short camping trips with us in our camper? I've heard cats don't like to travel.

When can I allow my new 4-month-old kitten to go outdoors alone, I have three older cats that go in and out using a cat door?

My kitten loves to climb but how high should I let him climb before its too dangerous if he falls?

I have an 8 month old cat I adopted a month and a half ago. I taught her to walk on leash and harness, and she loves outside. Now she always wants to be out. She will whine for hours by the door and try to dart out every time it is opened. She even jumps up and tries to open the doorknob. While the latter is comical I don’t appreciate her meowing in my face while I'm trying to study. I'm afraid to let her out by herself because I live in a small apt complex next to a busy road and I know she doesn’t know any better to stay out of the street. She has two windows she can look out, one all day and night. Is there any ways to make inside as interesting for her?

What I need to know is how cold is too cold to put two-month-old kittens outside? I have a building I can put them in but I’m worried they won't be warm enough. The temp here hasn't gotten below freezing. Do you think they will be okay?

Can kittens wear sweaters like dogs do?

I'm taking my kitten home for the holiday to my parents' house. (I live in an apartment.) I know cats have a sense of height, but I'm worried that my kitten might fall through the rails at the top of the stairs to the floor below. Should I keep him on ground floor or put a board up against the top rails, or is his sense of height good enough?

This is my first kitten/cat ever! I bought a collar for her, but it's too big right now for her. Are their advantages/disadvantages to having a collar on her?

Are there a right way and a wrong way to pick up a kitten? Is picking them up by the scruff of the neck appropriate?

Are there guidelines for choosing a good "home away from home" pet sitter or kennel?

I have been looking into getting 2 kittens to be outside barn cats. I have gone to a few animal rescues and have found that they will not let me adopt a kitten knowing it will be an outside cat. I have told them the kitten will spend the first few months inside until it is old enough to go out side and will have warm shelter in the tack room, plenty of food and water, as well as love and human interaction. The rescue groups stressed that ALL cats adopted must be indoor cats and they have made me feel like a horrible person for wanting an outdoor cat. Is it inhumane to have an outside cat?

I live in an apartment without central air. I have a 6-month-old kitten and the weather is getting very hot. Do you advise me to leave him in the air-conditioned bedroom all day, or should I purchase another window unit for the rest of the apartment. He is used to having free reign over it and it is not that large of a living space.
