Establishing Proper Eating Habits For Your Kitten
Many times cat owners refer to their cats as “finicky eaters.” The truth is that finicky eaters are made, not born. You can avoid this problem when you establish proper eating habits for your kitten.

Kittens, like adult cats, tend to be occasional eaters. They nibble at their food and return at intermittent intervals. This behavior is sometimes interpreted as a kitten’s not liking a certain diet. To tempt the nibbling kitten, a variety of foods are offered. Kittens learn to expect variety and become notorious holdouts as they wait for a new mealtime offering.

If your kitten enjoys a particular diet formulated for kittens such as Purina® Kitten Chow® brand kitten food, stay with it until you are ready to switch to a diet formulated for adult cats such as Purina® Cat Chow® brand cat foods. At that time make the diet change gradually. This gradual diet change usually eliminates any digestive upsets that may occur when a sudden diet change is made.

Avoid the temptation of trying to please your new kitten by feeding food from the table. This can upset the nutritional balance of the kitten food and contribute to creating a finicky eater. Behavior problems may result as a kitten attempts to steal food from the table.

As you establish proper eating habits for your kitten, you are preventing problems before they start and giving you kitten a good start nutritionally.

Next:  About 3 weeks ago I purchased a new set of bowls for my kitten's water and food and now she doesn't seem to be eating or drinking as much as she used to. What can we do to help her? I threw away the old bowls.
